As a former student of the university in question (without name droping ;-) ) their Mental Health services leave much to be desired for their students - although from what I understand they have gotten a BIT better, they still aren’t what they SHOULD be, just as they weren’t at Virgina Tech, or many of the other universities who don’t take into consideration that students are poor working people or kids with or without parental assistance, little or no insurance and they are all under A LOT of stress and pressure! And not just from classes, but from LIFE too! Coupled with financial issues and economic strain - the average student has a myriad of reasons to suffer from anxiety and depression that normal people don’t take into consideration.
NOW, I’m not condoning what she did, NOT BY ANY MEANS! Because what she did was heinous and inexcusable. I have been able to fathom a lot of crimes in my day, not excuse them, but fathom them nonetheless, but this one, this one I cannot even wrap my mind around!
And having depression issues myself, understanding and knowing the concept of mental illness and society’s stigma and watching my mother - a nurse - refuse to go to counseling and just get medication from her PCP so she doesn’t get "labeled" in fear of losing her licences, mental illness is shrouded in prejudice in the worst form! And tragedies like these, where people believe that these resorts are their only way out - THEIR ONLY WAY is the injustice and it is where we as a nation need to step in and say - where are we failing our mentally ill? Where are we as family members failing our family with mental health issues? Where are we as school, as friends, as neighbors, as a community failing our mentally ill?
On my last campus, they were more receptive to helping their students, and made it easier for me to start a sattelite group of a group already meeting here in Louisville sponsored by the National Depressive and Bi-polar Association. It was for students, faculty, AND the community surrounding all of Indiana University Southeast. Although, when I left the university and turned it over to other members, it eventually disbanded. It doesn’t mean that if I can do it, someone else can’t do it too. I have actually been trying to do the same thing out in my area of town again...why, you say, because it’s needed...AND IT’S ALWAYS FREE!!!! Imagine that, community members coming together to offer support, resources and networking to people in need...who heard of the such!??? >:-(
