The current administration vs. living with an alcoholic

Current
mood:
worried
Category: News and Politics
I was just sitting here surfing the internet while watching
television, and a commercial for Al-Anon came on. It was describing what it was
like to live with an alcoholic. Before it announced exactly what it was
advertising for, it caught my attention, as it seemed like they were going to
make a reference to the current presidential administration. It described how you
feel afraid to speak, but afraid not to, etc. Then it instructed u to contact Al-Anon
family services. Is that the definition of irony or what?
Recently, after watching a
movie regarding John Lennon vs. the US, G Gordon Liddy was actually interviewed
in present day and he came across almost proud that he was a part of the Nixon
Administration. He bragged about how he lit his cigar from the candle of a
protester, holding a vigil for the war in Vietnam.
Upon seeing that clip, my
8 year old daughter asked, "Why don't they do that with the war now? She
was innocently referring to the massive protests and vigils for the war back
then. I didn't quite know how to answer that. How do you tell a child that
people are afraid, years after Lennon, King, Kennedy, and others are kept down
our voices are a moot point now? If our own president can be assassinated
because he didn't believe what "the people" (whomever that may be,
democrats or republicans, I guess it would be whichever person with the most
money (= power) and what they're agenda is), then Joe Blow, average American,
isn't going to do anything. Especially knowing what we really know about
history. Better yet, how do you tell them, our future leaders, that there isn't
hope left? "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" along with
"freedom" is just an illusion, an illusion to mask the ignorance of a
dying race.
I just hope that my
personal lack of motivation because of the vast inequities and inconsistencies
in what will be an 8 year hell, doesn't affect her motivation, but I can't help
but hope that she doesn't attempt any major upheavals in public thinking like
M.L King, John Lennon, and others of their generation...simply because we all
know how their causes turned out!

Yes, it is true that
in this country if you have a real chance on taking on the status quo, you
will die. However, I thinking that you might be mistaking apathy for fear.
A lot of people believe that it is just a coincidence that they all happen
to die. Besides, I think that people now equate happiness with the ability
to buy trinkets in the immediate. The chance that one day the big screen
television will come down in price is now our "pursuit of
happiness". I think that if you really want to get people to do
something about our government, it is not so much fear of the government
that you have to get rid of it is our mindless entertainment. Now, there is
one situation that I think you have to watch out for regarding fear. That
is fear that if you speak out that you will never get another job again. We
may have job protection by having our voting be anonymous, but when we
speak out it is there for employers to see.
